            [0] => 1-Introduction :
Heterotopic ossification (OH) is defined as soft tissue metaplasia into bone formation, sometimes
extensive. It is often idiopathic, involving the transformation of pluripotent stem cells into
osteoblasts, and is benign, recurrent and unpredictable.
2-Problematic :
To study the various risk factors for heterotopic ossification, with the aim of gaining a better
understanding of its pathophysiology and hence its prevention and treatment.
3-Materials and Methods :
Retrospective study based on a single case; a 37-year-old male patient with no antecedents operated
on for a post-traumatic fracture of the left tibial plateau at D7 with placement of a screwed plate of
the proximal tibia, complicated at 2 months post-operative by heterotopic ossification of the medial
collateral ligament of the operated knee.
4- Results and discussion :
Several etiopathogenic mechanisms have been suggested. Two hypotheses can be cited: the first
involves a graft of osteoblastic cells. The second hypothesis involves osteoblastic metaplasia of
mesenchymal cells within a rapidly renewing tissue.
5-Conclusion:
The aetiology and pathogenesis of heterotopic ossification of the soft tissues remain unknown
despite the advanced work carried out over the last few decades. It therefore remains a problem
that continues to preoccupy orthopaedic surgeons.
